Whether designing a squadron, Friday, morale, or pencil patch; there are a few things to consider that will ensure you receive a great looking, high quality patch that your squadron will be proud to wear.
-
KISS: “Keep It Simple Soldier”. We understand that you want to put a little bit of everything that makes your squadron iconic on your patch. A wonderful idea--in theory, but not very practical or realistic if you want to create a quality patch.
-
Colors: We do not need a color copy, but it’s helpful for us to know the colors you envision. We are experts on The Institute of Heraldry’s (TIOH) standards for military emblems and we will apply these standards to your design. Here is an overview of the Rules of Military Heraldry.
-
Patch Size: The size of the fuzzy Velcro on most flight suits is 4" x 4". A larger patch will hang off the Velcro and tends to get caught on just about every piece of fabric that you walk by. We highly recommend a maximum size of 4” tall or wide for flight suit patches.
-
Text Size: To get the best results, the text should be at least 1/4th of an inch tall. With smaller text it is difficult to manipulate the stitches into letters or numbers, such as “8” or “R”.
-
Type of Border: There are a couple different border options; merrow, heat cut, and leather. The merrow or overlock border is common for military squadron patches. The USAF major command (MAJCOM) and Wing patches use a heat cut border. A heat cut border is also better for designs with an odd shape. Leather borders can be added to any patch and you can also add a merrow border to the edge of a leather border. Here are some examples of patch border options.
-
Faces: Pinup girls and celebrities are great ideas; but the fact is, facial features are extremely challenging to replicate with thread. Unless the person’s face is animated, like a cartoon, or takes up at least 2/3 the space on your patch...it just won't work.
